Monthly Archives: March 2018

I often get my inspirations for a theme based on products folks send in and ask me to look into, so here’s that semi-regular reminder to folks to keep those suggestions coming!

This week’s theme is Tales of the Five Editions, in which I will Pick something from each iteration of Dungeons & DragonsNaturally, we’ll start with the First and this excellent gem from that era. The World of Greyhawk is one of the earliest and best examples of genuine world-building within the tabletop RPG hobby. Frankly, it’s one of the inspirations for my own Shaintar, and I’d wager a great many fantasy worlds owe a good bit of their organization and attention-to-detail to this colorful and helpful product from the earliest days of gaming.

So the players have been complaining that the campaign is too dull, eh? Not enough detail? Why is this country at war with its neighbors? How can trade routes exist with all those wandering monsters? Most importantly, why do all of those unsacked, unlooted dungeons and ruins stand so close to the one big city all of the adventurers in the world hail from?

Rejoice, Dungeon Masters, and relax! All of these questions can be answered by following the example of the volume in your hands. The World of Greyhawk is here, and is suitable for use as the backdrop of a new campaign without changes; or, as an alternative, city, country or geographical descriptions can be used to fill in details for existing campaigns.

The World of Greyhawk is in the form of a gazetteer written by a historian native to the region, and as such includes the calendar systems used by the peoples of Oerth, a history of the major nations over the last thousand years, a discussion of climate in the different regions of the world, and even an appendix listing many runes and symbols (and their meanings) which are found in ancient and magical writings.

Another fun Pick for Mighty Mice Week, this one features grim sword-and-sorcery adventures… with mice facing down barbarian rats and monstrous foxes and owls. If ever you wanted to introduce your kids to the old school concepts of pulp fantasy adventure, Hyperborean Mice is an interesting gateway to it.

HYPERBOREAN MICE is a role-playing game of grim Swords & Sorcery action… as portrayed by talking mice and rats.

The ancient White Lords, albino mice with magical powers, rule over the valley of Hyperborea, but their empire is crumbling. Barbarian rat tribes, deadly predators and political intrigue threaten to bring their mousy civilization to an end.

Terrible predators like foxes and owls take the place of giants and dragons. Voracious shrew clans raid the Fallows, seeking mice and rats to fill their larders. Centipedes scuttle beneath the underbrush, seeking prey. Hawks force the inhabitants to stay under cover during the day, while owls stalk the sky at night. The system includes rules for dangerous predators such as shrews, foxes and weasels, as well as less offensive creatures like crows and pigeons.

Legendary horrors stalk the land, unique predators with potent magical abilities of their own. The terrifying Mocker, a centipede whose only voice is the imitated cries of his victims. The serpent Ssaaa gathers a cult of worshipers to do her bidding in the valley. And no mouse dares stand against dread Hoorooru, the ancient ruler of Rookswood and the enemy of the gods.

Play a Royal Mouse, White Mouse, Common Mouse, Jumping Mouse, White Rat, Common Rat or even one of the brutish Wild Rats. Your character might be a lowly commoner or even an outcast… or a wealthy noblemouse of high standing.

HYPERBOREAN MICE uses a simple stat+skill+2d6 system that supports multiple levels of success, different critical success results for different weapons, and an original magic system focused around six different magical arts and four levels of spell effects. There are dozens of combat and non-combat non-magical powers for characters to take and rules governing conflicts between creatures of vastly different sizes.

I haven’t done one of these in a while (I need to get back to this), but this one is very special to me. My dear friend, Chelsea Winslow, is an exceptionally talented performer in many ways. We call her Songbird for a reason, however, because she has one of the most amazing voices we’ve ever experienced the joy of hearing. Her range is incredible, and her gift for delivering a song in the way it should be is something to behold.

Before her is an opportunity any one of us would wish to seize for all it’s worth – she’s been accepted to an incredible school called the International Lyric Academy, where she will participate in their Musical Theater program over the summer… in Italy!

Of course, there’s always a cost involved, and Chelsea is much like the rest of my crew – gifted in so many ways, except where it comes to money. Not being of the 1%, she’s wisely asking for help to get her there and do things like eat and have a place to sleep.

If you’ve ever had a dream like this, or you consider yourself a patron of the arts, please consider helping my dear friend and one of the most talented people I know. Thank you!

I have been accepted into the International Lyric Academy for their Musical Theatre program in Italy this July! I am one of 30 in the country who were accepted into the program and I am absolutely thrilled! It is a two week intensive program, where I will be taking voice, acting and dance training from professional Broadway artists. We will be performing at the end of the program in various capacities in a lovely outdoor venue in Italy.

I am raising money to cover the cost of the program and my flight to Italy. I plan to put on a concert here in Colorado, in addition to this campaign to raise funds as well.

I have been singing since I was a little girl and have been in many different musicals, operas, variety shows and cabarets throughout my life. I studied voice in college and I have always wanted to go abroad and perform.

This is a wonderful opportunity I have been given and is not something I can afford on my own. I would be so grateful for anything you are able to contribute to help make this dream come true! Thank you so much for your support to help make this happen!

As we continue with Mighty Mice Week, let’s look at the latest in the Pugmire world of post-human fantasy, Monarchies of Mau. I had the very distinct pleasure of playing in a special game with Eddy Webb himself at AndoCon, one in which a team of cats and a team of dogs met up, negotiated around significant social awkwardness, and wound up united against science-and-sorcery obsessed mice and rats. It was a wonderful time, and you owe it to yourself to grab this and explore a world where, among other things, mice and rats want to turn those research tables on the rest of the world.

Before we were six. Now we are one. We differ on many points, but on these we agree: always trust our instincts, always reward loyalty, and always pounce upon minions of the Unseen. Without these tenets, we are no longer worthy of the adoration of Man.

— Monarch Trillani Persian von Mau, deceased

Cats have inherited the world, unifying their six fractious monarchies after untold centuries.

These cats have been uplifted to use tools and language, and they seek to rediscover the ruins of the Old Ones. Some have learned to use the leftover technology of humanity, but they believe it to be magic given to them by their lost worshippers. Others seek to create a cohesive nation, using Precepts of Mau agreed to after years of political conflict. The world is dangerous and mysterious, but the instincts of a good cat will always be true.

Monarchies of Mau Early Access is a pre-release, advance look at the upcoming Monarchies of Mau roleplaying game.

It is a near-complete rulebook allowing players to dive right into the world of Monarchies of Mau as the final game is still in development. Some highlights of Monarchies of Mau Early Access include:

• An evocative and mysterious setting that’s both family friendly and deep enough to create compelling stories.

• A traditional fantasy rules system redesigned for streamlined play and easy creation of heroic cats, with an emphasis on cooperation and action over competition and violence.

• A variety of callings and houses that give access to several fun and interesting secrets.

• Rival species to interact with, like dogs and rats, along with terrifying and dangerous monsters that roam the landscape.

Gonna be a short week, since I didn’t get in until late yesterday and was exhausted (AndoCon, Kickstarter launch). While at AndoCon, I met the great folks of Shoreless Skies Publishing, the creators and publishers of Heavy Metal Thunder MouseThey are great folks, fun to hang out with, and as passionate about this thing we do as I am. And this product suggests one of my strangest themes for SPOD ever – Mighty Mice Week! So check out this FATE-driven Sons of Anarchy-meets-cartoon mice bit of wonderful.

Heavy Metal Thunder Mouse is the tabletop roleplaying game of mice and their motorcycle clubs!
You and your friends make your mice, found your club, and hit the streets. These are mice with the gusto to build their own motorcycles and set off into an intimidating world where they are outsized, but never outclassed.

HMTM uses the rules of Fate to tell stories about the drama of city mice and their motorcycle clubs. It’s an RPG that works best with 2-5 players (plus the GM). It’s fit for episodic play (sessions last about 3-4 hours) and epic campaigns!

Your stories are set in Thunder City, USA. For small creatures existing in a place which doesn’t belong to them, these stories will be filled with the drama of their lives, and the trouble, both inside and outside, of a biker gang. Will your gang be Robin Hood-like doers of good, springing cheese from unwatched refrigerators and delivering it to needy widows, or will you be thugs and thieves exploiting the weak? Your mouse, your bike, and your gang all belong to you and the stories you tell at your table.

Throw on your cut, have a nibble of cheese, and fire up the engines.

We’re closing out GM’s Day Sale Week with this gem from Mongoose Publishing for the Traveller RPG. A rather expansive campaign that could potentially keep a group of players going for yearsThe Pirates of Drinax is a perfect gift for that Game Master you’d really like to run a serious science-fiction RPG for you.

Possibly the best campaign ever published…

A truly massive Traveller sandbox, the Pirates of Drinax is packed with enough adventures and source material to keep even the most dedicated group going for years!

In the Pirates of Drinax, the Travellers play a band of adventurers entrusted by the King of Drinax with a letter of marque, permitting them to prey on ‘illegal’ trade within the borders of the vanished kingdom. The King hopes this piracy will give him the leverage he needs to restore Drinax to its former glory, and intends for the Travellers to win back all the planets lost over the last two centuries – but the King’s plans are just the starting point for this campaign.

Once the Travellers have their letter of marque and ship, it’s up to them what to do next. Will they stay loyal to their patron and help restore Drinax? Will they turn rogue and create their own kingdom? Will they be heroes or monsters, pirates or privateers? Will they make their fortune amid the pitiless stars, or will the cold depths of the Trojan Reach be their grave?

The Pirates if Drinax contains three books and a poster:

* Book 1: The Pirates of Drinax Campaign
* Book 2: The Trojan Reach
* Book 3: Ships of the Reach
* A giant 24” x 40” double-sided poster map

The three books that form The Pirates of Drinax contain a full campaign, the Trojan Reach sector, rules and source material introducing the ferocious but noble Aslan, and many new ships unique to the Reach, along with a giant poster map featuring the Trojan Reach sector, the Floating Palace of Drinax, and the Harrier-class commerce raider.

The Pirates of Drinax truly has everything you need to run an action-packed Traveller campaign.

Rolling on through GM’s Day Sale Week, here’s another hot item on sale for Vampire: The Masquerade (20th Anniversary) fans. Beckett’s Jyhad Diary is the definitive sourcebook for those who want to delve into the entire World of Darkness as it pertains to the eternal struggles and games engaged in by vampires.

It’s ever been a loaded word among vampires. Jyhad is in force everywhere from lofty, perfumed Elysium to cloying, smoke-filled blood feasts. Jyhad’s the eternal game played by elders, Methuselahs, and worse — it’s the agenda of beings so utterly beyond humanity, one such as yourself could scarcely understand its movements.

Luckily for you, you’ve picked up a copy of my diary. With my help you may just take a step on the first rung of understanding. Information worth having is information you must earn through blood, and oh, how I’ve bled for what’s contained within these pages.

— Beckett

Beckett’s Jyhad Diary serves as the definitive book of setting and plot for Vampire: The Masquerade, containing 30 chapters spanning different geographical regions, encountering vampires of every clan, profiling obscure and profound segments of the mythology, and providing countless story hooks on every page.

Masterfully written by the likes of Neall Raemonn Price, Joshua Alan Doetsch, Myranda Sarro, Steffie de Vaan, Malcolm Sheppard, Alan Alexander, Renee Knipe, and Matthew Dawkins, Beckett’s Jyhad Diary is as fascinating to read as to use for your game Chronicles.

With my own Freedom Squadron Kickstarter launching in four days from this writing, I thought I’d do some folks a proper and share their own KS efforts currently underway. Rising tide, all the boats, and all that, yeah?

First up is a superhero game from the folks who brought you Era: The Consortium and Era: Survival, stepping into superheroes. There’s only 12 days left on this one –

Play any superhero story you can imagine! Experience a detailed world, born from 15 years of writing comics… and choose its fate…

The 300-page Era: The Empowered Core Rulebook is built with the player in mind, using the Era d10 Rule Set. Even with the vast amount of possible character builds, Empowered abilities (superpowers), choices and outcomes, Era: The Empowered is a easy and simple game to play.

Era: The Empowered is a Tabletop RPG based in a world where superpowers are real. Across the world, individuals are emerging as heroes and villains.

You will play as one of these “Empowered” with remarkable abilities. Whether your ability is to harness the power of flame, read others’ minds or super strength, both sides will be interested in you…

Five years in the making, Era: The Empowered offers an opportunity for balanced characters with all types of abilities, from super strength to resurrection! The innovative Power Tree mechanic, designed and integrated into the Era d10 rule set for this game, provides the opportunity to build whatever powers you want.

I know a little something about taking a board game and turning its amazing setting material into a cool RPG, and that’s what’s happening with this one, as well…

Post-apocalyptic roleplaying in a seductively Savage World of motoring mayhem. Choose a side. Fight. Survive.

Welcome to the Devil’s Run Roleplaying Game kickstarter! Pledge now to helps us fund an RPG set within the zany and dark post-apocalypse of the popular Devil’s Run board game.

In a maelstrom of carnage and destruction worthy of a George Miller movie, the Devil’s Runsetting exploded onto the kickstarter scene with the high-octane fun of the Route 666 board game. The setting’s popularity has grown and grown thanks to the hugely successful Hell’s Highway expansion, but the thrill of the ride is far from over!

Red Scar are now all set to blow the doors off on the events that laid waste to continents, reshaped the global arena and gave rise to new powers and factions through the engaging medium of a pen-and-paper roleplaying game.

Another superhero one, but this has that cool mashup thing going on that makes for all-new experiences. This time around, it’s all about gangland 20’s action with superpowers!

It’s the 1920s Prohibition Era in the United States. Alcohol is illegal. Organized crime grows at an unprecedented rate as gangsters get rich selling hooch to a thirsty populace. You are one of those gangsters…and you have superpowers!

In the CAPERS tabletop roleplaying game, you portray a character with extraordinary abilities in the Roaring Twenties. As a gangster, you seek to exploit the law and get rich off of alcohol, gambling, prostitution, and racketeering. You join up with other players to collectively seek your fortunes in the vice-riddled, booze-soaked casinos and speakeasies of the Jazz Age.

Alternatively, you and the other players can portray members of law enforcement seeking to bring these criminals to justice.

CAPERS is a game of action, adventure, virtue, and vice in a world coming into its own. It’s a world of theft, fraud, subterfuge, and espionage. Your character will risk their life to find their place in this world, regardless of which side of the law they fall on.

I never in a million years would have guessed “Mexican Narcofiction” would be a thing, but here it is, and this one is absolutely grabbing the RPG community by the… well, by the wallets, I’d say. Of course, it is Mark Diaz Truman, and that name carries a lot of weight.

Cartel is a Mexican narcofiction tabletop roleplaying game—designed by me, Mark Diaz Truman!—a version of which I originally published as a 50-page preview for Gen Con 2015.

That preview had the basic materials you needed to play the game, but I’ve spent the last three years honing the game to a razor’s edge. Now, I’m funding a complete version of Cartel as a beautiful, full color, hardbound 8” x 8” book, packed with amazing art and useful tools.

In Cartel, you play bold narcos, naïve spouses, and dirty cops tied to the Sinaloa drug cartel, trying to survive in a dangerous game of drugs, money, and power. Navigate complex and dangerous relationships, make desperate plays for money and power, and discover how far you are willing to go to hold on to what is yours. Buena suerte, cabrón.

Finally, a Savage game book that could be an interesting companion to my own Freedom Squadron. Anthro-animals that totally throw back to the cartoons of the 80s and 90s. Note there are only 7 days left for this one!

I want to create the ultimate roleplaying game for fans of comics and shows like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, ThunderCats, Kung Fu Panda, Street Sharks, Captain Planet, and lesser-known classics like Silver Hawks and Tiger Sharks! I grew up loving those shows–where a cast of not-quite-human outcasts protect the world from nefarious threats and costumed maniacs. But outside of some long out of print books, no RPG has managed to capture the fun, excitement, and sheer oddity of those stories.

I want to change that.

So I’m creating KUNG FU ANIMALS (SAVE THE WORLD) using the fast, fun, and furious Savage Worlds roleplaying system.

I’m a huge fan of Savage Worlds, having played it for years and even using it for my own neo-noir crime setting, Streets of Bedlam.
